Brighton
Local 4477 Firefighter Todd Godek was given the
"Michael D. McNeill Determination Award" award this year for his energy
and compassion in rallying other Brighton Firefighters and local businesses to
"Fill the Boot", and increase their fund raising by 61.19% . Brighton
Firefighters raised over $16,000 in 2010 and have set a goal of $20,000 for the
2011 campaign. This is the first time a Brighton Firefighter has received the
award in its four year history.
Fire Danger Is High, Even In Brighton
A very real threat to our
community is the dry weather. As
summer nears everyone needs to be aware that you don’t have to live in the
mountains to be at risk for a wild fire.
All homeowners should prepare for the possibility of wild fire,
especially those in the remote areas of the community near open fields.

BRIGHTON FIRE WELCOMES NEW FIRE TRUCK TO FLEET
The
Greater Brighton Fire District's newest apparatus, a 100-foot aerial ladder
truck, arrived March 3rd. The truck will be based at the Main Street
station and used to access buildings taller than three stories and large
industrial buildings. The platform will allow for safer high-rise rescues,
and is safer in general as firefighters can stand in the bucket rather than
working from the end of a ladder. The aerial was purchased as a
result of a $600,000 Assistance for Firefighters Grant (FEMA).
Total cost of
the truck after equipping it will be approximately $950,000.
The new truck, named “Tower 51” is an addition to our fleet and is the first
platform for our district. “Tower 51” is
called a tower because it is a ladder truck with a platform at the end and
extends to 100 feet (25 feet longer than our current ladder truck).
It is able to pump 2000 gallons of water per minute and has an all steel
platform with a 1000 lb. rated capacity that permits 3 firefighters and 250 lbs
of equipment to be raised 100’ in the air.
The firefighting platform features two master stream mounted nozzles as
well as a handheld nozzle and hose allowing firefighters to fight a fire from
multiple directions. The platform will
increase both firefighter and citizen safety during rescue and firefighting
operations. The platform on the end of
the ladder will allow for rescue directly into the bucket, rather than operating
from the
end of a ladder only.
December,8,
2010 -
Greater Brighton Fire is in possession of a new pumper that was
received as the result of a $255,000 Energy and Mineral Grant through the State
of Colorado.
The new apparatus is a 4 wheel drive pumper
that will be placed at Station 54 in Great Rock.
The pumper carries 1000 gallons of water and
equipment for fires, car accidents, water rescue, and many other situations.
The total vehicle cost was $499,000.
It is expected that this pumper will serve the District for the next 15 to 20
years.

Owners
of The Grateful Dog pet boarding, Mike and Heather Hathaway donated three pet
oxygen masks to members of the Greater Fire Protection District. The three
donated masks are of three different sizes for use on various sized pets.
The masks can be carried on a fire apparatus and will be available for
use on pets in suffering from respiratory distress and smoke inhalation.
Prior to this generous donation our firefighters were unable to appropriately
administer oxygen to a pet in need.
Now, however, the masks will be available for use whenever the need arises.

Thank you
to everyone who participated and or contributed to the 2010 St. Baldrick’s
event! We had a great turn out and had a lot of fun. We are still waiting on the
final count after the cash and check donations are entered. The money count the
morning of the event, Team Brighton Fire Department raised $5,150.00 to Team
Thin Blue Hairline’s (Brighton PD) $3,995.00. There was a lot of friendly
trash talking and some great pranks played along the way, but in the end we all
did a great job!
Both teams arrived with some cash in hand to
turn in and we are waiting on a final count.
The organizers of the event had set a fund
raising goal of $10,000.00 and between Brighton Fire and Brighton PD, we (after
cash and checks are counted) achieved their goal. The morning of the event the
entire event raised $21,504.00 but expects that number to top $25,000.00.
Again I want to thank you for your
generosity! I am very proud to part of such a great bunch of people!

Rescue Victim Who Fell Through Ice
On January 17, 2010, at 2:00 PM, the Greater Brighton Fire
District was dispatched to the area of Hummingbird Circle and Swan Avenue on
report of a party in the water. Crews from Stations 51 and 55 as well as the
regional dive team were alerted. After the first Brighton fire unit
arrived they found that there was a single victim located in the water.

According to reports, two children were playing on the ice
when it gave way and they fell through. The first victim (11years
old) had self extricated prior to the fire departments arrival with bystander’s
assistance. The second victim (also an 11year old) was located in the
water holding on to an ice shelf approximately 30 feet from the shore line.
The victim was in the water at shoulder level and was becoming lethargic.
The depth of the water was found to be greater than six feet deep. Firefighters,
wearing ice rescue suits, made the rescue. The victim was removed from the
water and assessed by ambulance personnel. The victim was released to a parent.
With the fluctuating temperatures, the Fire District says it
is important to remember that the ice thickness is reduced and can be deceiving
from shore. The best recommendation is to stay off ponds during the winter.
