Firehouse Subs Supports Brighton Fire with Carbon Monoxide Detector Grant

Brighton Fire Rescue District was awarded a grant from Firehouse Subs which has allowed the District to purchase carbon monoxide (CO) detectors for citizens of our community.  The grant has helped us purchase just over 100 detectors that will be provided free of charge to citizens in need.  Not all homes, or apartments need to have a CO detectorClick on CO Detector  link to read more about this new program and if your home needs a detector.

Program officially kicks-off on September 22, 2011 with a presentation at the Brighton Senior Center about the dangers of carbon monoxide and information about using detectors correctly.  At that point anyone who thinks they may need a detector can call our main office at 303-659-4101 to schedule to have a fire crew come to their home to determine if they need a detector.

If you see this at your home, DO NOT try to fix it yourself. Contact your electrical utility provider (e.g. United Power) to have them fix it.

On August 14th, Mountain View Fire responded to a report of the side of a house on fire next to the electric meter.  On arrival they found a small amount of fire in the area of the meter.  It was quickly extinguished.  The electric utility arrived and stated that usually when this occurs that a circuit breaker at the home or on a power pole/box will trip, but not always.

What causes this is that as the ground shifts or settles (infamous Colorado bentonite/sandy silty clay soils) around the underground conduit to the meter, it pulls the conduit away from the meter while at the same time pulling the wires from the terminals in the meter.  See the attached photo taken by a responding firefighter after he went home and checked his house!
